Hospice Eligibility Criteria

Liver disease is any disturbance of liver function that causes illness. 4.5 million Americans suffer from liver disease.

Hospice Criteria for Liver Disease:

  1. Palliative Performance Score (PPS) ≤ 70% (see table below)

  2. Dependence on assistance for 2 or more activities of daily living (e.g. feeding, transferring, ambulation, bathing, continence, dressing)

  3. Pro-time prolonged more than 5 seconds over control or INR > 1.5

  4. Serum albumin < 2.5 gm/dl

  5. End stage liver disease is present and the patient shows at least one (1) of the following:

    • Ascites, refractory to treatment or patient non-compliant

    • Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

    • Hepatorenal syndrome

    • Hepatic encephalopathy refractory to treatment or patient non-compliant

    • Recurrent variceal bleeding despite intensive therapy
