Hospice Eligibility Criteria

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 out of every 5 deaths.

Hospice Criteria for Cancer:

  1. Palliative Performance Score (PPS) ≤ 70% (see table below)

  2. Dependence on assistance for 2 or more activities of daily living (e.g. feeding, transferring, ambulation, bathing, continence, dressing)

  3. Disease specific guidelines:

    • Disease with distance metastases at presentation

      OR

    • Progression from an earlier stage of disease to metastatic disease with either a continued decline in spite of definitive therapy or patient declines further disease directed therapy

      OR

    • Certain cancers with poor prognoses (e.g. small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer).

  4. Decision to forego any curative treatment.
